In terms of an overall maintenance strategy and budget, calibration can sometimes be treated like the poor relation to the maintenance of more expensive equipment purely due to costs involved.   However, in terms of production quality it should hold the same importance.   Control systems function the way they do based on the measurements fed to it by the instruments in the process.   Process plants rely on control systems to ensure that the right ingredients are fed into the process at the right time, and in the right quantities outlined by the “recipe” which is the process.   It is pretty simple when you boil it down to the basics, similarly to cooking, if you incorrectly add your ingredients then your recipe is off and there is a pretty good chance that you will not be happy with the pie you just baked.   Of course there is a cost factor to consider when talking about product quality, but it is also important to remember that there could be a safety risk for the recipient of the “pie”.  So the next time you are looking at your calibration processes, think about how important they really are and how well they need to be managed, otherwise you may end up with a burned pie.
