Big Data word cloudThe concept of Big Data is a relatively new concept which is surprising as the Internet has been around for a long time and there is no bigger data than the likes of Google and Yahoo.

Where Big Data starts to fall apart is compatibility between systems. Most software applications are written in an organised relational way, but they are designed in isolation. This in itself does not pose much of a problem when systems are separate and have their own special function to perform. Where the problem pops up is when you start to think about integration and running similar reports on different systems.

It is at this stage that it becomes clear that all systems are not the same and if set up in polar opposite ways then integration can be very difficult and in a lot of cases just not viable. The key is to get it right at the start, have a common hierarchy, keep the set-up simple and keep the terminology common and simple. Then you have to think about the different departments, some of which do not freely communicate. This in itself also can cause friction when trying to adopt a common platform. So the next time you want to implement a new system, think of standardisation.
