The Bright Side of Life: The theme for World Metrology Day 2015 is 'Measurements and Light'. The topic was chosen to align with the UNESCO International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015), a global initiative designed to highlight the key role light and optical technologies play in our daily lives and their importance for our future and for the sustainable development of the society we live in.

Metrology plays a central role in enabling the application of light-based technologies, and in turn, light is at the heart of many of the most important new elements of leading-edge measurement technologies.

To celebrate World Metrology Day and the International Year of Light, CompuCal will post a blog every day this week about how light is used to help us all in everyday life.

How is light helping with our everyday medical needs?

MRI ScanBreakthroughs in light technology continue to revolutionise the medical industry. Medical imaging, surgical procedures and even MRI scan diagnoses rely upon the use of light. Medical imaging is the process of creating visual representations of the interior of a body for further medical analysis. Such imaging is generally used in medical fields such as neuroscience, cardiology, psychiatry and psychology, amongst others. Common applications include CT (computed tomography) scans, MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging), ultrasounds and X-rays (a form of radiography).
