- Effective Data Migration for Calibration Management Software
Getting your data set up correctly for your calibration management software at the beginning is the start to a great calibration management system. Alternatively if you get this wrong at the start, then you will spend a long time trying to straighten it out.
Carefully map out all of your fields. Excel is a good tool for this. Insert comments and examples to clarify for others what each field is and its purpose.
The hidden enemy for all data migration projects is clear understanding of terminology. Some examples of different words that mean the same thing are "Location & Area, Site & Plant, Criticality & Class, Certificate # & Work Order #". Each of these examples mean the same thing when you know what the purpose of the field is.
In our experience there is no fixed benchmark or standard for field titles so you need to be careful. The time that you put in to get this right at the beginning will pay for itself many times over. Many of your software vendors will have the expertise and knowledge to help you with this process. The key to remember is that this takes time and is not a plug and play activity.
